BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) -- Louisiana officials say they have lined up 50,000 shelter spaces for the hurricane season that begins June 1 for people who need state evacuation assistance.

That's the full number of spots called for in the state's emergency plan.

The Department of Social Services announced the shelter arrangements Wednesday.
DSS says five states -- Texas, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas and Kentucky -- agreed to shelter up to 26,000 Louisiana residents who receive state evacuation assistance.

That's on top of the shelter spots through a state-built shelter in central Louisiana, leased shelter space in north Louisiana and other arrangements.

The state evacuated 37,000 people last fall for Hurricane Gustav.
