2016 ECRC Workshops dates and locations announced

The 2016 ECRC workshops dates and locations have been announced and registration is open for this year's 24 workshops throughout the eight-state region. These intensive boot-camp courses help prepare local elected officials, community leaders, and economic development leadership to support economic development and disaster recovery activities in their communities. Both modules-Economic Development Strategies and Disaster Recovery/Economic Resilience-will be held in each state.

Local leaders in west Tennessee attended this year's first ECRC workshop of 2016 last week. This first workshop was focused on economic development strategies for local leadership and featured speakers from IEDC and professional economic developers.

Delta communities receive Local Foods, Local Places awards to strengthen local food systems

The Obama administration has announced that five Delta communities are among the 27 national Local Foods, Local Places awardees for 2016. Through the federal Local Foods, Local Places Initiative designated communities will receive technical support to identify successful strategies for integrating local food into their community development efforts and create economic opportunities for local farmers and food entrepreneurs, revitalize main streets, and increase access to healthy food.

The awardees were chosen from more than 300 applicants nationwide. The 2016 Delta communities include:

  • Lake Village, Arkansas
  • Gainesville, Missouri
  • Jackson, Tennessee
  • Martin, Tennessee
  • Memphis, Tennessee

DRA is part of a six-agency partnership that provides technical assistance, planning support, and potential implementation funding for participating communities.

Every Child Is Ours breaks ground on new food pantry in Tuckerman, AR

The Delta Regional Authority was proud to participate in the Every Child Is Ours groundbreaking ceremony last week in Tuckerman, Arkansas. The new facility, supported by DRA RCAP funding, will house the Every Child is Ours community feeding program in Tuckerman that will serve senior adults and children in the area.

ECIO serves Tuckerman and communities in northern Jackson County and also sponsors mentoring and reading programs in partnership with the Jackson County School District.

DRA participates in IEDC Leadership Summit

Chairman Masingill was the keynote speaker for the International Economic Development Council's Leadership Summit in New Orleans last week. 

The Summit's theme was "Pathways to Diverse Economies and Innovative Ecosystems." Speaking to hundreds of economic development professionals from across the country, Chairman Masingill shared how the DRA's initiatives and programs, like the Delta Entrepreneurship Network and Leading Economically Competitive and Resilient Communities workshops, help build local economies and spur economic growth in the Delta.
