Innovative Readiness Training medical mission dates and locations announced for Summer 2016

DRA is excited to announce its seventh year of partnership with the U.S. military to provide medical, dental, optical, and other health services to underserved communities in the Delta region. The Innovative Readiness Training program will hold medical missions in five communities in the Delta, including a month-long clinic in West Memphis, Arkansas, the longest mission DRA has hosted in the region. Watch this recently released video for a sense of the great opportunity this program provides to Delta residents.

The following communities will host IRT medical missions during the following dates this summer:

  • Greyhound Medical: West Memphis, Arkansas | June 1-28, 2016
  • Bluegrass Medical: Bardwell, Mayfield, & Paducah, Kentucky | July 18-28, 2016
  • South Mississippi Medical: Natchez, Mississippi | August 4-14, 2016

Each mission provides medical, dental, and optical care to any patient from the communities located around the mission site at no charge to the patient. Services are provided by trained medical professionals in the military reserve forces. More details on location, time, and services provided will be available in the coming weeks.

Louisiana Economic Development hosts summit to highlight regionalism, workforce development

Louisiana held its first statewide economic development summit in a decade in Baton Rouge last week. With regional collaboration and workforce development as priorities, Governor John Bel Edwards and LED Secretary Don Pierson emphasized the numerous projects that have recently brought hundreds of jobs to the state but also the many projects that still remain strong opportunities for Louisiana communities.

Chairman Masingill led a panel on local engagement in the economic development process and took the opportunity to encourage collaboration between educational institutions and local leadership in workforce training and regional economic development. DRA leadership and staff also took part in Louisiana Economic Development's Community Competitiveness Advisory Council meeting, which DRA board designee Leslie Durham sits on as representative of the Louisiana Delta's economic development goals to make our communities better equipped to compete globally.

Washington County Economic Alliance Receives DRA Funding to Support Greenville Port Expansion

The Washington County Economic Alliance (WCEA) announced it has received a $20,850 award from DRA to assist in the Lower Mississippi River Port Investment Initiative (LMRPII). This investment, which comes through DRA's Rural Community Advancement Program, will fund the necessary cultural resource survey and subsurface soils investigation for the project.

The LMRPII will serve as a key step for the continuation of economic development efforts at the Port of Greenville, Mississippi, by aiding the expansion of developable land along the banks of Lake Ferguson. The 50 acres to be developed will give Washington County the opportunity to compete aggressively for economic development projects that require river access. The area currently has no available land at the port to offer industrial prospects, thus creating the potential for significant job growth and capital for Greenville, its residents, and the surrounding communities.

Summit '16 in Ruston, LA, spotlights disaster recovery and resilience planning

Planning for disaster recovery and economic resilience in our local communities has become a major topic of conversation for local and state leaders in our region. Last week, the Coordinating and Development Corporation in northwest Louisiana, one of the local development districts DRA works closely with, hosted Summit '16, a regional conference on community resiliency and economic development for northern Louisiana, southern Arkansas, and east Texas.

Chairman Masingill provided the lunch keynote to emphasize the importance of disaster planning on the community-level and spotlight tools local leadership can use to build more resilient communities. The summit was coincidently but appropriately timed in the wake of recent flooding that has caused major damage to communities across northeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Delta. Regional collaboration was once again emphasized as a necessary foundation for disaster recovery and renewed economic development.

DRA will host three ECRC workshops on disaster recovery and economic resilience in the coming month on April 28-29 in St. James, Missouri, on May 9-10 in El Dorado, Arkansas, and on May 12-13 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
