Delta Leadership meet with federal, congressional officials to discuss economic opportunities in Delta Communities

Members of the Delta Leadership Institute’s Executive Academy met last week with their congressional delegation and federal officials in Washington, DC, to talk about issues affecting the Mississippi River Delta and Alabama Black Belt regions, including creating good-paying jobs, growing small businesses and entrepreneurs, and training a skilled workforce.

The meetings also allow these Delta leaders to interact directly with their congressional representation and leaders from federal partners such as the White House Rural Council, USDA, EDA, HUD, and HRSA to discuss the policies and resources that they see as being most important to the region’s economic success, like workforce development, access to healthcare, entrepreneurship, disaster recovery and resilience, and geotourism.

DRA participates in sixth CGI America

The Clinton Global Initiative hosted its sixth CGI America meeting this week, bringing together leaders in business, philanthropy, government, and nonprofits to develop solutions that encourage economic growth, support long-term competitiveness, and increase social mobility in the United States.

Chairman Masingill and DRA staff once again participated in the meeting that has helped DRA connect with important partners for economic and community development programming throughout the Delta region. This year, Chairman Masingill spoke during a breakout session on “Service as a Career Pathway for Young Americans,” emphasizing the important role national and community services plays in advancing Delta communities.

I-69 Coalition discusses the "Corridor of the Future"

Spanning from Michigan to Mexico, the 2,680-mile I-69 Corridor has been labeled one of the six "Corridors of the Future" in the nation for stimulating trade and regional development.

Chairman Masingill toured sites along the future I-69 Corridor and attended the I-69 Coalition meeting in McGehee, AR, joining leaders from the Arkansas Highway Commission, Arkansas Economic Development Commission (AEDC), Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, the Arkansas Waterways Commission and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The I-69 Coalition discussed the establishment of the I-69 corridor and the benefits it would bring to the Delta and beyond, including job creation, improved transportation and safety, small community development, and the increased ability to freely trade goods and services across the region.
